Considerations for choosing and caring for foam

  • When deciding what foam to choose, things to keep in mind:

Feel: (Soft vs Firm) The feel of foam is slightly subjective. Keep in mind, if you like soft foam that is too soft will not be as supportive and may lead to soreness, typically around the back. Consider adding a topper, layering, or using HR foams to increase softness and comfort without sacrificing support.

Durability: (Density factor) Basically density is a ratio of foam to air in a giving area. The more dense the foam, the  more wall with less air pocket per cell. This difference affects the weight of the foam and so is often represented by weight, (i.e. 1.8# or 2.5# or without decimals 18lb or 25lb). Higher density foams may feel firmer than lower density foam as they resist compression. High density foams are suggested when the cushion is used for heavy and/or everyday use, low profile (1” to 2”or 3” tall) cushions/mattresses, or for larger body builds* or reduced mobility needs, as the increased density helps reduce collapsing or bottoming out. Lower density foam is usually suggested for applications with lighter and/or occasional use*.

(*Foam thinner than 3 inches will be a bit softer than stated and foam thicker than 5 inches will be a bit firmer than stated. Due to the way foam supports, large body builds (270LB or more) usually need a firmer foam to get proper support, while slight body builds (75LB or less), may be able to use a soft foam.)

  • Can I return an order?

    All orders are considered final.

Due to the custom needs of each order and the general nature of the product, foam may not be returned or exchanged. See our Return Policy for issues involving incorrect orders, mistakes in size, or defects. See Foam Return Policy. (link to policy)

  • I bought foam for a mattress/topper, do I need to cover it?

Yes! Though foam can be very strong and last a long time protecting it is important. Moisture, dust, and other small particles can readily get into unprotected foam. A cover is a great way to help extend the life of a foam product by reducing the wear, tear soiling and exposure to natural elements. Whether off the self or custom made a cover is much easier and less expensive to clean than having to replace a foam product.

  • Can you clean foam?

Open cell-foam products should not be exposed to water and are not machine washable. Small areas of surface grime/dirt may be possible to spot clean small stains with gentle cleaning agents, if the product is allowed to dry fully. Cleaning or washing foam is not recommended. Damage occurring from attempting to clean a foam product(s) is not the responsibility or liability of The Foam Man or any partners.

It is recommended that any foam exposed to any mold or moldy conditions should not be used and should be disposed of.
